Designers Get Floral : Pre-Spring 2009

With success of Daisy, Marc Jacobs has based a watch and necklace duo based on its logo. Not only is it perfectly simplistic, but the collection has a burst of color with an unconventional green colorway (not shown).
Final Grade: B+

Juicy Couture is in the same boat, daisy chains and different flowers decorate their jewelry this season. JC brings back cute stud earrings, long costume-style necklaces, and rock-embellished cuffs. It's natural and hippie chic, a trend I'm glad hasn't disappeared. Juicy has also dropped their new Spring '09 bags in pastels, as did Coach, and even Betsey. And as a spring baby, I love the concept. I think this season, though, we'll see more femininity and delicacy rather than headbands and moccasins. Thank God, because I need a relief!

F**k Valentines Day: How to Make the Most of Being Alone

Personally, for the past four years, I've spent my Valentine's Day alone and in despair while my loved ones have said, "Oh it's just a silly little day where immature couples buy hundreds of dollars worth of gifts to compensate for their shallow-stage of love." Well I believe that to some degree, but as someone who represents the single-girl or long-distance lover, we need to be shown that we're loved, too. If there isn't a special enough guy out there to realize that no matter your belief system, we're women and we like frilly romantic things once in a while (i.e., Valentine's Day), then we have to take matters into our own hands. Thankfully, I have a few ideas this year to keep myself, as well as all of us lonesome girls out there, happy.

1. Get Yourself a Little Something
Or not. This Valentine's Day, I was thinking of going out and buying myself this Juicy Couture wallet I've been wanting, as well as some new bras. Nothing is better than some retail therapy, and hey, do it for you because you deserve it. You've worked hard to make everyone happy this holiday season and now it's time to make yourself happy.

2. F**k Your Diet and Your New Years Resolution
Go to Walgreens, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Pinkberry, Sprinkles, or whomever has your sweet tooth, and stock up on indulgent yummies. It's only one day. Remind yourself that, and continue indulging. You can burn off the extra calories tomorrow.

3. Go to Dinner With Your Single Friends
Who said you should stay home today? Call up your single pals and the restaurant of your choice, and schedule a dinner date that will take your mind off the day. Everyone will enjoy it.

4. Don't Feel Sorry For Yourself
Lack of love? That special someone not doing something special? It's okay. With the steps above, it'll take your mind off of the lonliness and wishing. It only wastes time anyway. Look at Valentine's Day as a way to pamper yourself, not someone else. Even though it was the initial reason behind the steps, it doesn't have to be your motive behind doing something nice for yourself. Everyday should be that day. Enjoy it, and don't dwell. If someone wants to show you they really care, they will. And just because it doesn't happen on the "Love Holiday", doesn't mean it's any less special.

Back to the Sixties: VS and Others Offer Retro Themed Swim Wear

...and it's fabulous. Soon after the Semi-Annual Sale madness, Victoria's Secret sent us all their spring swimsuit previews and yours truly is loving it. I'm seeing a lot of tye-dyed and unconventional silhouettes this season. Brands who also incorporated a retro feel to their swim collection include Insight and Kimchi Blue via Urban Outfitters, quoted to be "Marilyn-like".

If you're not the swimsuit kind of gal, don't fret. Atomic suggests wearing tights underneath and doing the Edie Sedgwick.

Movies We're Stoked On - Adventureland

It's official - I currently have the sickest crush ever on Martin Starr. What does that mean to you? Probably not much; but to the nearest movie theater, it means I'm going to be one of the butts in their seats on March 27 seeing Adventureland, the story of a recent college graduate who takes a job at a local theme park to fund a much-needed vacation. It co-stars Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig, so you know the plot has to be at least slightly funny.

Vintage Victoria - Bringing the Romance Back to Lingerie

Now, even though I can rock jeans and a t-shirt on a semi-daily basis with the best of them, I still like to dress girly and look at shiny, pretty, frilly things. If you're like me in that respect, then you'll love the new Vintage Victoria line from Victoria's Secret. While the line is limited at this point, it's assumed that bigger and better things are on the way for the public's consumption. I also am totally appreciating the tasteful and classy photospreads for the products, seeing as though not every woman who shops at VS for bras and undies are raging hussies.

Premium Denim vs. Mall Denim: Where Do You Draw The Line?

There are some things I'll hands-down spend my money on: cardigans, boots, records, purses, DVDs, etcetc. There are other things I'm certainly not so wild and crazy about shelling out for, but in a more inexpensive setting are totally necessary, like sneakers and jeans. I'm perfectly happy spending $55 for two pairs of irresistably cute and surprisingly well-fitting Bullhead jeans from PacSun instead of saving multiple paychecks for a single pair of Rock and Republics or True Religions. I don't care as much about having a horseshoe design embroidered on my behind as I do putting gas in my car or having a little extra spending money for a fun night out. I mean, am I crazy?

Sure, when I inevitably get enveloped in Hollywood culture and actually start caring about what everyone thinks, I'll probably cave and spend a small fortune on denim, but right now, that's just not where my priorities are.

So here's where I turn it over to you: How much would you pay for a pair of jeans? What would you spend that $300 on otherwise?

Why? I have no idea, but for some odd reason, I've just been bursting with California pride lately. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that everyone else is loving New York 'til the cows come home. Anyway, there are a few I'm totally drooling over for no legitimate reason other than the fact that they represent something I hold near and dear: being a Californian.

The New Year
Along with a growing sense of self-control, welcoming 2009 is a biggie for me. It seems almost as though, upon waking up on the first, things were instantly better. It was kind of like that scene in The Wizard of Oz, when the Lollipop Guild sing about the witch being dead. Whether I look back at this post in eleven months with disgust is something no one knows just yet, but here's to hoping things stay peachy.

Anyway, I promise this post has more substance than solely being a reintroduction to the slacker half of ATOMIC (starting college really can make a gal lazy). Other than watching Freaks and Geeks to no end and thinking about what to blog without actually putting the wheels in motion to achieve anything in that arena, I haven't really been doing much. How have you been? Good, so we're all caught up! Here we go...

Do the winter blues have you down? I know the feeling. It seems like every year, I spend at least two months preceeding the cold weather fretting about the diminishing number of hoodies I own - not to mention all the appropriate shoe-planning I have to end up doing because apparently all I own are flats and high-tops that I would never, ever wear out in the gloomy California slush. And don't even get me started on the fact that I always find myself begrudgingly saying "hasta la vista!" to my summer dresses.

Well this year, I'm dreaming of a lush green Spring and dressing accordingly. Here are a few of this coming season's staples to consider that will make your wardrobe bloom like a flower garden.

At least one graphic tee and lady-like blouse... EACH.
Personally, I never really know what look I'm going for. I dress how I like and seem to not (noticeably) offend anyone, so I can usually go on my merry way. There are times when I like to "dress down" and throw on a graphic tee with jeans and some sneakers or boots, and this 'Lolita' inspired shirt by Dope Couture is number one on my list for Spring for those such ocassions. The v-neck and curve-hugging shape make this tee an A+.

A killer pair of denim shorts.
I must admit that up until this past winter (when my ache for warm weather started), I was really aprehensive about wearing shorts. Through the years, I've been teased because my legs are about five shades whiter than Casper the ghost. I've embraced it, actually, so this Spring and Summer I'm all about the shorts. And, as a bonus, you can usually find some on the cheap at this point in time. I just recently finagled my way into a pair of Bullheads at my local PacSun for only $7! Just don't let your derriere hang out and we'll be all good, ladies.

I've always been oddly attracted to the whole "old man" aspect of oversized cardigans and worn-in loafers, so these shoes are perfect for my inner library skulking nerd.

Mama Drops Finished Holiday '08-'09 Collection

I've been LOVING the few tees that are currently on sale on Karmaloop, but after seeing the look book via Nitrolicious, I have to say the collection is a little too concept-y for me.

The individual pieces alone are awesome, and I don't believe dressing up obviously non-Latina girls as late 80's Echo Park cholas in Mi Vida Loca is supposed to back up your idea. I feel it's a little too stereotypical to be taken seriously. Any how, regardless of my opinion, the collection is chock full of many different and unique tees to choose from, flannel, and jackets, and available on Karmaloop as of now.

MAC Cosmetics x Hello Kitty Collaboration Rumors Proved True

F**k You, Economy : Fashion Houses and Distributors Cut Costs

With this year's economic woes, more than a handful of luxury, as well as common brands, have been feeling under pressure on the financial front. With losses of jobs and cut hours, consumers can no longer afford to shell out a couple hundred, even thousands, on their favorite brands.

Thus, houses of luxurious brands such as Chanel and Christian Louboutin plan to slash prices in hopes their sales with rise steadily as the economy, hopefully, does. Though this may not take immediate effect for this holiday season, keep an eye out for sales after the start of the New Year.

As for our favorite least expensive brands, well, you can see the backlash of the economy to date. Target recently announced its holiday markdown plan for this year, as Atomic favorite, Cultist, has accumulated about six pages worth of discounted clothes 10-40% off. We have seen similar trends from mega street wear distributor, Karmaloop, within the YEAR-every week there is a new discount promo code.

Even though I am writing as if the new prices are a bad thing, I say bring it on and drop them even lower, because it'll definitely take a while for our economy to patch up.

MF Elaborates: Par Un

Being out of the blogging world for a few months really led me to read other blogs, magazines, and even look in depth at the people around me. "What are they wearing? Are you serious with that? I could do that!", were all some phrases running through my head at the time. Finally I sit down after a long day at work, with energy strong enough to finally elaborate on the things which have been "grinding me gears". Onward!

Are you serious? As my fellow fashion bloggers/journalists gush, rant, and rave over the continuous collections released, I find myself confused. Is it me or are all of the pieces coming out of this collaboration just, well, pieces of crap? Blame it on my zodiac sign Aries or my claim that I am a "Carrie" (referring to Carrie Bradshaw), but I like pieces that POP. I like to see a punch of color somewhere, an undeniable sense of sophistication, or odd color-play. All I've seen are heavy and dark silhouettes since the collaboration started. A little color here and there, but nothing screams to me. I'm ready to see something new. NEXT!

Gabriella from M.I.S.S./Mama Clothing: My Shoes Don't Need a Diet
The title above carries the original post. I can understand where she is coming from. Everyone has their own opinion, and I respect people for that alone. All I can say is that for someone who DOESN'T look good in Nike Dunk Highs, I am grateful there is a team at Nike developing a slimmer model for women. Sneakers, in my opinion, aren't universal. Either you rock them or you don't. You see a slender girl with chunky kicks and a big jacket and she looks cute, plain and simple. Then on the other hand you have girls like me, not the biggest or the most slender girl, feeling awkward and oddly short, in a pair. I secretly wished while purchasing my Dunk-lows, that I could look fly in a pair of highs; I wanted something a little more feminine. None the less, I think if Nike would put their design team to some nose-to-the-grindstone research, their new "slimmer" designs would get more love. My words to any "Sneaker Freaker", or "shoe head", DON'T KNOCK 'EM 'TIL YOU SEE 'EM! Just like we put our definition of womens street wear into our own hands (MOB, HB, and Mama), Nike is trying to do the same. Let's just wait and see before we judge it.

Hellz Bellz "Bulletproof Sisters" Delivery II Available Now!

Seeing the first pack from the Hellz Bellz Winter/Holiday 08 collection only furthered my belief that Miss Lawn should have a Nobel Prize in women's streetwear design. At last, she brings us the long awaited second-half. Still keeping with the Punk theme that is most prominent in HB's designs, it gets a little stronger with this side, as does the Womens Rights direction; It's very apparent. One of my most favorite pieces, if I could pick a single one, is the "Stand Up" tee, complete with Distillers-era Brody Dalle attempting to "do it like a man", at a urinal. What humor does the rest of the collection bring? Well, I'd have to say rummaging through the look book and individual pieces via Karmaloop, I laugh for only the fact that I cannot own it all. Other ATOMIC picks include the Diana Ross jean, Golden Bellz jacket, and the Bandit top.

Other Bitches Just Front: Married to the Mob Drops Winter '08

Over the past year, I have yet to be disappointed with Married to the Mob's swagger. In my opinion, it's getting better and better and kicking everyone's ass, even mine.

All of us, at some point and time, and even what seems like everyday, have had a bad hair day. With the autumn season underway, with returning to our normal scheduled lives, here at Atomic we know you all want to look your best. So hopefully you all find this blog useful and find out all of the secrets we have hidden in our self proclaimed expert mind!

The most important thing in hair care has to be shampooing and conditioning. Some of you know that your hair can't handle being washed everyday due to over drying, while some of us (like myself), have to wash everyday because it is too oily if we don't. Luckily if you got the bucks, I've discovered a shampoo that help us all; and I've tried almost every big brand out there.

Not only does it improve the texture of your hair and control its natural oils, it heals it. So after just a few used your hair will feel dramatically different!

Going with the Kerstase line, I'd have to recommend its conditioning mate: Ciment Anti-Usure Lightweight Conditioner. A little goes a very long way, and your hair doesn't feel heavy or polluted like some conditioners do.
And of course, if you curl,straighten, or blow dry your hair often, chances are it is extremely damaged. It smells spectacular and holds your hair neatly in place without it looking and feeling uncomfortable. It also adds a light shine to your hair, and who doesn't want that!
If you need some volume, I've also discovered the dream product for that, that I've been using for years: Guts 10 by Redken. It's a spray mousse, so you can spray it directly at your roots for instant volume. The great thing is that you've still got movement!

Though some brands like Mama and Nails Did have none or few picks, we're sure with the make over underway that we will see their Fall '08 collections in the store before you know it. So a while back I came across a video that was nothing else but pure genius, a video on YouTube of The Bird and the Bee's "Again and Again", done though numerous Apple applications. I watched it again this morning and I still feel the same way; the thing is damn cool! See it here!

Of course, if you are into well-done parodies like us at Atomic, you will appreciate the "Again and Again" Windows XP and Windows 95 versions as well! If you happen to have some prior knowledge about Windows and all of its issues, you can guess what will happen at the end of the video, as I did. Good laughs!

Forever 21: You Naughty, Naughty Thing!

We all love Forever 21 because of the fact that the nation-wide chain is kind on our wallets and easily accessible - but seriously, what's up with all the knock-offs, guys? If designers were to take action it wouldn't be the first time someone got litigious on their butts, but no one seems to notice - or care. Let's compare, shall we?

New this week to the Forever 21 webstore is a pair of "shiny leggings" that looks obscenely similar to a deisgn that American Apparel originated years ago and has been carrying successfully ever since their creation.

Of course, F21 is offering their new legwear at a significantly cheaper price, but how much are you willing to pay to support such practices as these? Please ponder your answer over your evening tea and get back to me.

Because of the fact that lamé is now a more popular textile than ever, it's hard to point a finger of blame squarely at Forever 21, but let's try this next example on for size...

Other than slight tone-changes throughout - as well as a difference in production value - the two shoes shown above are nearly identical.

I am really not out to prove a negative point about Forever 21 with this blog. I would even wager to say that the majority of my basics come from the trendy store. What I am out to prove, however, is that you can never be too careful about what you buy. If you want quality assurance and have money to burn, go higher-end; if you want an alternative on the lower end of the price scale, go Forever 21 and the like.

I guess what I'm wanting to divulge is that if anyone comes after Forever 21, I plead the fifth.

Betsey Johnson Event Coverage - August 7th 2008

The brand new Betsey Johnson boutique opened just in time for this summer, saving us Atomic girls the blues of browsing the barely-available accessories inside our local Macy's and online. At last we have our own fully stocked Betsey store with gorgeous purses(new and older from last season), that signature kitschy jewelry layed out behind glass, and cute dresses hung on opposite sides of the store.

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of Miss Johnson's fashion voyage herself, our own little BJ store threw a rad event in the name of it! Shop, grab a cupcake or lollipop, champagne or apple cider, and fill out a free raffle ticket for a chance to win a custom Betsey gift basket yourself was the name of the game, and Atomic's own Michaela (me), won it! A surprise since I practically went on a whim with Emily; She had called me an hour and a half before we arrived! It contained goodies from Fekkai, Origins, Kiehls, and of course, Betsey Johnson. On that note, know that anything is possible in the "event" world, so don't give up just yet! We definitely praise that the South Bay has its very own slice of heaven, the Betsey Johnson store inside Valley Fair Mall. Check it out if you haven't, and get into it!

Converse Connectivity: 100th Anniversary Celebration

If you're like us, you've seen that crazy-awesome commercial featuring Pharrell, Julian Casablancas of the Strokes, and Santogold, and wondered, "What the heck is this?". We asked our selves that in the best way possible, since the 30 second clip left that song in our head. Turns out that song is called "My Drive Thru" and produced by none other than Pharrell's team, N.E.R.D.

Past icons connecting with the present: Sid Vicious, M.I.A., Joan Jett, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, James Dean, Dwayne Wade, Common, Hunter S. Thompson, and Billie Joe Armstrong.

The commerical is Converse's new "Connectivity Campaign", celebration its 100th Anniversary in the footwear game. Let's face it, Converse sneakers have been seen on almost every rock star, pop star, athlete, sleeze, groupie, preppy, nerd, goth, hipster, your grandfather and your mother for more than a century. Why is it that, when it comes down to it, Converse are the most loved and versatile shoe out there? And as we see it, everyone's icons have been pictured in a pair of Chuck All Stars. Though our icons are so different with their music and their game, one thing remains the medium, the Shoe. Who would have thought a pair a sneakers would be so damn iconic?

Project Runway Season 5 Returns!

Last night, millions of fashion crazed Americans watched sixteen eager designers race to make the best and most original creation, out of grocery items. Yes, grocery items. Looks like Project Runway brought back the Gristedes Grocery Store challenge from Season 1, in which designers would pick out any materials under the price of $75, in thirty minutes. We love it because the challenge is well, challenging and shows us immediately who's in for the long haul.
While some made the most out of their table cloths and mops, some flopped with their grocery bags and shower curtains. And although the show is relatively new, well, it premiered last night, we can already see the potential in many designers this early in the competition.
An Atomic favorite was Kelli, from Ohio and FIDM Alum, who concocted a pleated A-line skirt made from sea foam vacuum bags. After she bleached and dyed them for a modern print, and utilized numerous of materials from the grocery store, she won the first challenge, clearly showing that she "made it work" (excuse me for the Tim-ism)!
We're excited to see what the rest of the contestants bring to the runway next week and we're sure this is will be a season that does not disappoint!

ATOMIC PRESENTS: The Official ME GUSTA Interview!

Let's face it, if you have not even browsed ME GUSTA's MySpace profile, you're pretty much out the loop. After discovering the extremely talented local super-team a few months back, us ladies of ATOMIC have been quite intrigued; We're simply astounded that this kind of raw, but polished, talent could come out of our own city. All that San Jose has seen are numerous hardcore bands that headline The Cave and San Jose Skate, of all places. Not that we are hating on your game, but not everyone is into that.
So you can definitely say that ME GUSTA is a breath of fresh air to the local music scene and to all you of cats that enjoy home made beats created by geniuses. In the short while they have been together, they have already had an impression on us, even though we have never seen them live. We interviewed ¡Me Gusta! for the first time last week, and we were blown away by their responses and willingness to do this interview. We hope all of you enjoy it as much as we did.

AZ: So, ME GUSTA, what are your real names?
MG: Sean Paul Richards & Dominic Lopez

AZ: Where did the name of the group come from, and how long have you guys been doing your thing?
MG: Our name basically originated from me(Sean) wanting to do something with a clever and catchy name...Thought about it for a while and just realized that no one had used the name ME GUSTA before. We started doing our thing musically and decided to use the name for our group.

As for length of time, we've been doing this together since March 25, 2008. Dominic has been up on making music for quite a few years, but this collaborative effort is a relatively new project.

AZ: Where are you two from (city, state, or universe)?
MG:We're from San Jose, California.

AZ: How and what led you guys to start making your own music? How serious is MG to each one of you, individually?
MG:What led us to start making music together was basically just creative vibes that flowed between us. We're best friends and dealing with music we go back and forth, picking and deciding what each piece should sound like. Dominic and I do this for the love of creating music, and we don't really do it for any other reason than to make everyone happy when they listen. That alone is reason enough to continue producing tracks.

As for how serious this is to each of us individually I can't really answer, but we've both dedicated a lot of time and effort to both creating tracks as well as spreading the word about what we're doing. It's not about which one of us is more serious...It's just the fact that both of us are doing our best to create music for the world to hear. Me Gusta is a collaborative effort that I, personally, feel we have both dedicated ourselves to in the fullest. There are a lot of other things we're dealing with (school, friends, etc), but we always make our music a huge priority.

AZ: So who does what ? Is there something in particular that just one of you does to add your own flavor to your beats , or is it a pretty even partnership?

MG: When we make the music, Domo usually gets on the track and picks some samples out. We go through these samples, chop them up, and create seperate loops out of them. We then get down and choose different drum noises (kick, snare, hat, etc) and add them in. We then create seperate loops of these and see how things are. We take turns tweaking things and take listens over and over until we're satisfied with what we're working on.

AZ: Equipment; where did you get it all from, and what do you use? Do you have any other help or is it just you two?
MG:We're currently using both Garageband & Ableton software on an Apple MacBook computer. We're more comfortable on Garageband, but we're slowly moving into Ableton as it is a relatively simple program to understand. It should come into play a lot more as we move further towards live sets and such.
As for help, we don't really get any help with production, but have recieved a lot of support and tips from our boys Lazer Sword (San Francisco) & our Montreal buddy, Hovatron. If you get a chance you should definitely look up each of their myspaces and leave them some love.

AZ: Aside from the single tracks you have posted on your official MySpace and the Remixtape, are they any other beats you have made but declined to put up? If so, why?

MG: We've worked on a lot of stuff during this progressive period of the last few months. Most of these tracks have been released to the public via our MySpace or free download. However, there are a handful of tracks we've produced that have yet to be put up due to either the fact that we're waiting for the right time to release them, we've produced them for an artist and don't want others to steal the beat, or just haven't completed the tracks. Other than that, we want our fans to listen up and have some good times with our music.

AZ: Tell us about the new Remixtape. We think it's really awesome that you guys let it be available for download, and all of the tracks in our opinion are genius. What inspired you to remix versions of some of our favorite songs?
MG: REMIXTAPE Vol. 1 is the first of many free mixtapes that we'll be handing out to the public via free download. We produce a lot of remixes because we enjoy working with acapellas and producing around them. Plus these remixes give us a lot of opportunities to re-imagine tracks that we feel are bomb in one way and would sound chill in another way. We do a lot of production, and when we come across an acapella that matches up with one of our beats we get down and try to make a track as best as we know how. We're just inspired in general to make what we consider bangers and we're glad that y'all as well as all of our fans out there are diggin' the tracks so much.

AZ: What inspires you, period? What are some of your favorite artists right now, and always?

MG: We're inspired but anything & everything. Anything we've been through in life & everything we've yet to experience. We try not to limit ourselves to anything. As for our favorite artists, we try not to pick favorites. We're usually checking out everything and listening to whatever we find.

AZ: We're sure you get this a lot, but, when do you think you guys will start doing live sets? Is that even something you'd like to do?

MG: First of all, yes...we get that question all the time. We'd LOVE to get live, but at the moment we really don't have the equipment or overall knowledge to create the live experience we're looking to create. In my opinion, when we do get live we want it to be as great as we can make it, so we're thus taking our time with it. I honestly have no idea when we will finally get live, but we'll hopefully be able to purchase the equipment, gain the knowledge necessary to create live sets, and master everything sometime within the next 6 months.

AZ: Where do you guys want to be in 1 year with your music? 5 years?

MG:In 1 year's time we hope to further our production skills, have a lot of material out for our fans to listen to, and be better known among not only our own area but across the world. Every group hopes for big things, and we're definitely looking to reach as many fans as we can. That's the bottom line: making music for people to get down to.
5 years ahead? We'll see about that...

AZ: So what can we expect from Me Gusta in the near, and distant future? Any specific goals? Any upcoming projects that you're excited to drop?
MG: In the near future you can expect to hear some collaborations with talented emcees as well as more original material to get y'all dancing. You can also expect to hear REMIXTAPE Vol. 2 for sure.

As for the future, we have goals of eventually coming out with our first all ME GUSTA EP, creating more music, working with more talented folks, and of course, getting live.

People may say his V.I.P. Party Boy days are over and question his importance and association with Gravy Train (another Atomic favorite), but we've always had mad love for him and all that he does. In a way he's an icon to us, he has staying power and we hope to see more from him soon.

Fred Flare: Crazy Cool or Just Plain Crazy? You Decide!

With a handy strap that keeps your sunnies close at all times, Fred Flare has the right idea with this awesome, deadstocked product. Emily's Grade: A+.

Finally, we have the just plain weird; The Gold Retainer Necklace.

Not only is the creep-factor of this item extremely high, but at the INSANE price of $300, I wouldn't doubt the removal of this necklace from the website by early next week. Unless you wanted retribution for an excrutiatingly painful retainer experience in your teens, what would drive someone to purchase this? I guess that's just one of those questions that will never be answered. Emily's Grade: D-.

For a Girl Who Doesn't Like Red...

...I find myself drooling over Christian Louboutin's newest styles via Bergdorf Goodman.

There is something so incredibly sexy about red pumps, and even if you wear all black, the color pops and makes a great accessory. I've never seen Spanish lace utilized for detail like on the Passementarie Pump, and I love it. Though the last two selections are obviously not red, they are some classics that I'm sincerely infatuated with. Can you guess why? ;)

Seeing Stars With Colette

French boutique and powerhouse, Colette, have teamed up with some of our favorite brands this year, including Married to the Mob, Gap, and Hello Kitty/Dear Daniel. Fortunately for us, Colette did some brainstorming early this year to give us dope collaborations with Oakley and Onitsuka Tiger by Asics this summer. Being a fan of Tigers, I found out about the collaboration a few weeks back and discovered the blue star theme was also to be put to use on sunglasses by Oakley. The Tigers by Colette are high tops, which are uncommon to the brand, and the sunglasses are Wayfarer-esque against clear plastic frames. I'm totally digging this and hope to cop the high tops soon. Until the release date, keep checking back for updates on release dates and where-to-buys on Colette.Fr.

Darkhorse: Late, But Back With a Vengeance

Since March, I've been wondering where the hell Darkhorse was at with their Spring/Summer 2008 collection. There were no updates on their site nor on their carrier's. This is when I thought Darkhorse, along with Tens, were temporarily out of the street wear game for the warm seasons ahead. Looks like Wendy from Nitrolicious found that they are now out of their hiatus with that nitty gritty, tongue-in-cheek, overtly sexual inside jokes of a t-shirt collection a la Spring/Summer '08, which we love. No one does it better than Darkhorse when it comes to that sort of thing, and i'm definitely loving the collection for both men and women.
Grace Jones worship is back, as well as a reference to Daft Punk and homage to fashion's most sought-after designers, John Galliano of Dior, Alexander McQueen for Givenchy/McQ and Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel. You know i'm going to cop this, after picking up that Uncle Karl tee at UO a few weeks back. Be on the lookout at Cultist, Overkill and any other DH retailer for the collection to drop any day now.

Chanel Autumn/Winter '08-'09

I sincerely believe that no one at the Chanel house can do wrong, and Karl Lagerfeld has shown us this since '83. Looks like this season's looks are based heavily upon futuristic themes, as well as a feminine medieval-armor type look, and I'm loving it. Colors from Chanel this season include: titanium, dark grey, silver, (yes many grey and metal hues), pink, and going back to the original colors that make Chanel, black and white.
Slim fitting tweed suits are also back, as well as slim fitted dresses cinched at the waist. We're looking at a more voluminous ensemble on top and bottom, and accentuating the waist. A tube top look with signature white trousers was even seen, something very different, but simplistic and chic for the autumn season, which looked like it was a left over piece from the Cruise collection.
Props used were frames around the model's faces (genius), and rosettes in the couture collection.

Final Grade: A+

Killing It: MTV's Weekly Artists, Par Deux

From an artist's standpoint, getting bigger and being in the public eye can be exciting and thrilling; being able to see your music influence people and played everywhere. I have no doubt in my mind that this is an exhilarating process. But what about the fans? I'm talking about the fans that have known you since you were virtually unheard of, and still stayed by your side when the hipsters labeled you this and said you were copying someone else's game. Those fans, just like us, or at least very similar. Which brings up my current beef with MTV, seeing one artist being exploited weekly.
I've been upset about this for a while, since it began. When it comes down to it, it's the artists' decision whether to collaborate with MTV. Therefore, they technically aren't doing anything against their will here. It just plainly disgusts me that coincidentally, many of Atomic's favorite artists have been featured within the series:

-Aesop Rock
-Gnarls Barkley
-Rilo Kiley
-(this week) Santogold

Santogold vs. Santosilver

It slightly takes away from their originality and appeal, in my opinion, and I'd like to know all of yours.

Target's Latest Triumph - New GO International Designs Aim To Please

Those who are of true personal style know that sometimes you have to get your hands dirty to find a real gem. Most ladies would never reveal their secret shopping havens of choice, but personally, I get a tiny rush from the shock I receive after telling someone I fished through the discount section on my local Wal-Mart to recover a bangin' accessory.

Target, luckily, has never reached the pantheon of "white trash" cliché that the 'Marts have cornered the market on (at least not in this part of the great state of California), but lately their guest designer collections have been... somewhat lacking. A girl of substance can only survive on basics from Isaac Mizrahi for so long, am I right?

Well hold on to your panties, fashionphiles, because recovering from the onslaught of the Jovovich-Hawk collection (I mean seriously Milla, what WAS that?) has done Target well: This round of GO designs features a brand-new line of amazing pieces, and the best part of the deal is that they're totally non-descript!

With ne'er a designer label in sight, the chic separates and adorable dresses are proof that you don't have to spend a million dollars to look like you've just dropped the cash. My personal theory is that Target needed to keep the GO cycle flowing while they got another high-end designer to contribute to their inventory, but I'm fine with what they've got happening now! Keep it up, babies!

P.S. Scope the hidden pockets on the super cute yellow and black colorblock dress. Adorable AND practical!
P.P.S. If my theory is correct, the ATOMIC ladies wouldn't protest if we got at least half the left-overs from the Zac Posen for Target collection shipped over to the states. Pretty please?

Songs That Make Emily's Heart Smile, Ears Dance, and Other Body Parts Do Things They Weren't Designed To Do!

While there are some songs that come and go as easily as the wind (cheesy I know, but bear with me), there are others that stick with you for life. These are some of the songs which have helped strengthen my philosophy of life, shape who I strive to become, and - strangely enough - restore my faith in society. Here we go!

1. Fire Island, AK - The Long Winters
There are only a few things that may warrant me to get a tattoo dedicated to it: my parents, my siblings, and this song. It's THAT amazing. John Roderick ties the story of a lost love into an amazingly poignant ode to anyone in one of life's tight spots (at least, to anyone who chooses interpret it that way). Did it reach you?

2. Prom Night At Hater High - The Long Winters
Come on, they had to stick together! This tune perfectly embodies the feeling almost every teenager has had to get the hell out of the place where they feel the least understood: their hometowns. Sample lyric: "These kids are my age/It's strange to say/Look up!/Every star is singing in space/But I am motionless/On this tiny strip..." I could cry!

3. Highschool Lover - AIR
I, unfortunately, can no longer enjoy this song recreationally because I'm saving it for a special occasion (those closest to me know what I'm talking about). But what I can say for now is that it's the most elegant, beautiful, heartbreaking, inspiring, devastating, simple song one could ever grace their ears with.

4. The Crane Takes Flight - Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
A close tie for third was this violin-driven ballad dedicated to the finer things in life: a good heart, a strong will, and an open mind. Mr. Leo mixes the wordplay of a poet with the rhythm of a true Jersey-shore musician, and both coexist perfectly in the intertwining genius of The Crane Takes Flight.

5. You Are What You Love - Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins
I cannot say enough about this song. The lyrics are thoughtful and heart-wrenching, while still remaining meaningful and all together amazing. Her solo effort most definitely paid off, and we have the boys of Rilo Kiley to thank (among others) for their support of her work.

6. I'm Looking Through You - The Beatles
No list of mine would be complete without a Beatles song. Have you ever had a feeling that the person you're most trusting of isn't being as honest with you as they could be? Has it become a problem? The Fab Four knows how you feel, and you can consider this song written just for that person.

7. Polite Dance Song - The Bird and the Bee
The first song that really makes you want to do what it's instructing you to. Downplay the Macarena and obey Inara George's instructions. You will be rewarded with the time of your life.

8. Attached - Goodbye Ian
What originally stemmed from a recent, yet brief (who am I kidding, it's on-going), love of Ricky Ullman bloomed the love of a simple and beautifully written song about the pleading of a man who asks his lover to change their ways and come back to him. Kinda like rehab for the heart, huh?

9. Midnight Surprise - Lightspeed Champion
You know a song is good when you'll sit through almost ten minutes of it to get to your favorite part... and it's not even the lyrics that get you! Being the sucker for an amazing piano-driven crescendo that I am, the time flies by before I know it. Love you lots, Lightspeed.

10. Wild World - Cat Stevens
Ever tried to give advice to someone who just wouldn't listen? Play them this song and pray to God they wise up... but try not to shed a billion tears while doing so.

11. Doctor My Eyes - Jackson Browne
It seems as though every song on this list so far has been about a deeply personal journey, and this hit from Mr. Browne is no different. Recounting the mistakes he's made and resigning himself to the fact that no one is perfect, but STILL trying his hardest to make it through with a better head is the goal. Listen and love.

12. Munich - Editors
All you have to do is listen to the song for one minute and you'll be hooked. An excellent video often enhances the admiration one may have for a certain song, and when seen, this video will blow your mind. Grab your helmet and head on over to YouTube. 13. O Yeah - End of Fashion
Set over a poppy beat with the accompanyment of young children, "O Yeah" will certainly teach you how to express happiness again - No need for expensive smile school!

14. Florida - Modest Mouse
Never move forward with regrets. Isaac Brock knows this, and now ao do you. Make him proud.

15. Satellite - Guster
This song makes me sad for so many reasons, which are essentially silly (brutal honesty never hurt anyone...ish). We all want to be thought of the way Guster loves their girls, period.

Greatest Songs of All Time Series: Michaela's Picks

Here's something I've wanted to do for a while-accumulate a list of all of the songs that I declare brilliant, and in to particular order. Some may be extremely obvious,and some may be extremely odd. Check them out yourself, I'm sure they won't disappoint if you're open to all kinds of music. I've picked fifteen(I tried!) amazing songs to let you see what's been in my head. Enjoy!

1."Frank Sinatra" by Miss Kittin & The Hacker
Straight of of Party Monster, it's been a long time favorite of mine. You either love it hate it!
Either way, those French people are insane, and I mean that in the best way possible.

2."Gettin' It" by Too $hort
A favorite song of mine since I was a mini, and the best song by Too $hort in my opinion to this day. He's still on top of his game, though. The lyrics hit the spot, the beat is dope, $hort's a boss.

3. "Blue Monday"/"Ceremony" by New Order
The video for Blue Monday is bananas-so random, so 80's. I don't even think it's humanly possible to hate this song. Chances are that you're mom got down to this one, just like mine did.
Ceremony is it's polar opposite though, and simply beautiful. Beautiful enough to be on the Marie Antoinette soundtrack-in which it fits in so perfectly. Sofia Cappola knows good music.

4. "Black Plastic" by Ladytron
Classic. I bought Light & Magic when it first came out, stepping into synth-pop after my long industrial/EBM phase and it was a smooth transition. The song clearly is a combination of Shoe-Gaze and Synth-pop to where you can actually take notice.

5. "Fox in the Snow" by Belle & Sebastian
It's hard to explain why this song means so much to me. On the contrary to what you think, it's not about a "fox" being the main subject. It always has a way to make me calm and get my self together. Sometimes I feel like the song could possibly be about me and my struggles. Just let me go on and think that.

6."Sexy Boy" by Air
Air is one of the best bands in world. The music they make have this way of capturing every moment in your life that you want it to, and though the story in the song may be unclear, I find it an advantage. That being, the song can be anything you want it to be. I don't think about sexy boys when I listen to this song, and chances are that neither will you. It's too magnificent and hypnotizing to do that anyway. Air's songs are like a platter of hot platonic-uber sexuality with a side of beauty and a glass of class. Discover Air and you'll know what I mean.

7."Safe and Sound" by Azure Ray
The only song that make me instantly cry. Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor have the most beautiful voices I have EVER heard.

8. "Around the World" by Daft Punk
The duo that are legends. The masked, larger than life, genius duo. A group that hip-hop, pop, and electro fans love alike, Daft Punk have shown us some serious staying power throughout the years and they keep handing out their crafty concoctions like it's Christmas. Let's just face it now, Daft Punk is inspired by the greatest and inspires the greatest. This song is just one example of why that's so clear to see, well, hear.

9."Rock N' Roll" by The Sounds
The Sounds kick ass, period. This one is a personal favorite of mine, and it's like a gorgeous punch in the face. I guess i'm drawn to songs like that, ha ha.

10."Head Over Heels" by Tears for Fears
I think the title speaks for itself. Whether your relationship is constantly sweet, perfectly bittersweet, or just bitter, it tells a story that you understand.

11. "Pretty Baby" by Blondie
Debbie Harry was, and still is, the most beautiful woman of rock. That voice, that face-What will it take you people to listen to another song of Blondie besides "Heart of Glass"?

12. "Call Me Up" by Chromeo
I'm a firm believer that there is nothing sexier than Dave 1's voice and P-Thugg's beats. Damn I wish they were Prince's proteges, but it reallydoesn't matter because they sound like it anyway.
This specific track could also do no wrong in the mixing world, Kill the Noise and Swear Words have released dope remixes that are as good as the original.

13. "Romantic Rights" by Death From Above 1979
What was going though my mind when I first heard this song? It was like nothing i've ever heard before, and all I wanted to hear from then on out. The grinding, mega-distorted guitar, the banging, bass-y drums, the laid back vocals and the cheeky lyrics. The cherry on top would have to be the electro influence thrown in there. A perfect big mess, I like to call it. It works wonderfully, either way. R.I.P., DFA1979, but we're happy to see that JFK has moved on to better things, like our beloved powerhouse, MSTRKRFT.

14. "D.A.N.C.E." by Justice
Alas we've come my favorite group. I can go on listing why this song is f**king perfect for days on end, but instead i'll just say that Justice has creativity you wish you had. You can see it in their performances, their style, their music, their videos, their remixes. They're the type of group you wish you could be. Definitely a huge influence on what I plan to do next, and their music inspires me in all kinds of ways. Thanks, boys.

15. "Monster Hospital Remix" by MSTRKRFT
How many songs do you know of that have a remix and a video to go with it? This would be one of them and the reason is quite clear, the MSTRKRFT remix is far better than the original. The song oozes something that I described about Air, it totally serves you perfection and tact. Everything has been manipulated in the right way-obviously the song that made me fall in love with MSTRKRFT. They are just as perfect as their counterpart, Justice.

16. "Hypnotize" by Notorious B.I.G.
It's pretty damn hard to list just one Notorious B.I.G. song, when every single one is amazing.
Either way, this particular song is one that I've loved since it came out. Even when I was a kid, I knew this song was boss. It's easy to see that if he was still alive, he'd be a bigger mogul than Diddy, and a better role model for everyone. Guess that is one reason why they called him "Biggie". Everything he did was larger than life.

LA Riot's Coachella Mix

The sickest mash-up that I've heard in a very long time. An Atomic favorite, LA Riots, have released a Coachella Mix that's available to hear at The Los Angeles Times Coachella page (the Quicktime player is to the right).

Keith Haring's Mural, Painted Over

We all have experienced, as an artist or as a curious onlooker, that some of our favorite pieces of street art eventually fade, are painted over, or vandalized by other so called "artists". Fortunately, this was not the case with Haring's mural on Houston St./Bowery in New York City.
The Keith Haring Foundation, Deitch Projects, and Goldman Properties have hired a group of artists to recreate, or repaint, the mural in it's original form, using various photographic documentations of the original mural to bring it as original as possible.
I have to say, for someone who has been a fan of Haring and looked at his work as extensively as myself-the job was well done. Not only are the colors as brighter than before, but if Keith were still around, i'm sure he would be extremely flattered.

The mural is set to debut as finished on May 4th, which would have been his 50th birthday, and set to stay up until New Years Eve until it is sadly repainted by the city, once again and forever.

Everyone's Perfect Accessory: Sunglasses

It only being a month and a half away from the summer season, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to bring you some advice in serious sunglass shopping. Have you ever walked around the city or even driven by in your car, seeing someone with sunglasses that completely ruin their outfit? Well, we have.
We're bringing you the rules of sunglass shopping and where to buy them. In time, you'll see that a perfect pair (or two) of shades could be the only accessory you'll need to be looking fly.

Rule #1: Your Face Shape
Oval-shaped faces should wear large squared frames or large circular frames, it balances out your features and compliments the face shape very well.
Round-shaped faces can wear almost any style, but beware of that generic rectangle-shaped frames that are still being sold in stores!
Square-shaped faces look great in circular framed glasses, can can almost pull off any shape.
Heart-shaped faces look great in bigger square shaped frames, or bigger circular shaped ones. The trick is to balance out the narrowing of the chin in something that "pops" if you will. Sometimes, if you can pull it off, you get that bubble eye/alien effect, that can be very flattering. Thank you Nicole Richie, who is one example of this working to your advantage!

Rule #2: Faux Pas and how to avoid them
It may not even be about your individual face shape! Since there can be fashion faux pas, there can definitely be sunglass faux pas. We've all bought cheaply made glasses that break. The truth is that you don't have to spend a lot to get great quality sunglasses, the trick is it take your time looking around! Even though wearing a specific designer's sunglasses seems like a dream, it's not always flattering to see a huge logo on the side of their head that is shouting, "LOOK AT ME!".
There are other places that you can find the same amount of luxury for a whole lot less.

Rule #3: Where to buy & how to buy
Last season, the Ray Ban wayfarer came back. The only problem is that you see everyone with the same colors! You can break the habit by simply thrift shopping (and, no, not those hot spots that are so expensive). The Claw Money online shop offers many vintage wayfarer styles, including my favorite i've seen to date.

You can even find your perfect round-frames, rare and vintage, from American Apparel.

A favorite of mine are the flat-top aviators that they offer, because the flatter any face shape!
